Why this matters.
Before they buy, people search for "the best" version of whatever you sell and read the first guide that comes up.
That guide decides who gets the sale. Often it recommends a brand and then links to Amazon or a retailer, because that is who pays the guide. The brand wins the recommendation and loses the customer, the margin and the email address.
Most founders I show this to have never seen it. It is happening on someone else's website.
I have fixed this before.
Three partners and I bought into UpDownDesk, an online standing-desk store, when it was turning over about £11,000 a month.
I went to the publisher of every "best standing desk" guide, one by one, with a proper affiliate deal. We ended up leading those lists.
The full account is in what moved the price when we sold. These are my own figures from running the business.
How it works.
- 1. You askTwo minutesYour website and, if you like, the product you most want checked.
- 2. I lookWithin five working daysThe guides buyers read for your product, whether you are in them, and where each link goes.
- 3. You decideNo obligationYou get the list by email. If it is worth fixing, I will say what I would do and what it would cost.
Who is asking.
Robert Prime. I have built, grown and sold online businesses since 1999, and I run an agency that grows brands on Amazon and TikTok Shop. Outside the agency I advise a few founder-led brands a year, personally.
Questions.
What do I actually get?
A short written list: the buying guides that matter for your product, whether you are in each one, where its "buy" link sends the reader, and the first five publishers I would approach and what I would offer them.
Why is it free?
Because it is the fastest way for you to see whether I know what I am talking about. If there is something worth fixing, I will tell you what I would charge to fix it. If not, you keep the list.
Who is it for?
Founder-led UK consumer brands that sell from their own online store and turn over roughly £1m to £20m. If most of your sales go through supermarkets or trade, this particular problem matters less to you.
Why do the guides send buyers elsewhere?
Most "best of" guides earn a commission on the links they use. If a retailer or a marketplace pays them and you do not, the link goes there, even when it is your product they recommend.
Will you contact the publishers for me?
Not as part of the free check. That is the paid work: the pitch, the terms, the tracking and the follow-up.
